About the Authors

Dr. Jeffrey J. Crow is Director of the Division of Archives and History, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University and has taught in several North Carolina colleges and universities. He has written numerous books.

Dr. John R. Bell, Jr., is professor of history emeritus at Western Carolina University in Culhowee. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has authored several books and articles.
