About the Author

Dr. Gary R. Freeze has been teaching North Carolinians about their history for more than twenty years. His career has included stints at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC State University, UNC-Charlotte, UNCGreensboro, and, since 1994, Catawba College. This textbook was developed from state history courses he has taught in the History, Extension, and Education departments at Catawba. He is also very active in state history circles. He served for years on the advisory committee of the Junior Tar Heel Historians Association. He is also an experienced author. His books on Catawba County have become the standard for writing local history in the state. Dr. Freeze’s dedication to state history has earned him membership in the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors given state residents. The Statesville native holds all his degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he attended as a Morehead Scholar, and where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He swears that he eats both eastern and western style barbecue.


Contributing Authors

Chris Baker is a veteran teacher of twelve years with the Wake County Public School System. A native North Carolinian, he currently works at Salem Middle School in Apex, where he serves as chairperson of the Social Studies Department. He earned his M.Ed. in 2000 and earned recognition as a National Board Certified teacher in 2003. Mr. Baker has written curriculum for Wake County in both seventh and eighth grade social studies and was a supplemental author for Tar Heel Junior Historian Magazine’s Fall 2005 edition. Mr. Baker is married and has three sons. He currently lives in Cary.

Lisa Holmes and Amy C. Niemas have taught special education, middle school, and high school in both Georgia and North Carolina. They are currently teachers at . a North Carolina program for middle school and high school students who are in need of remediation.

Dr. Emmett R. Mullins is the technology coordinator for a Gwinnett County School in Georgia. He has over twenty years of teaching experience and has done extensive work writing supplemental materials for instruction in social studies and technology integration. He is the author of learning activities at Clairmont Press’s www.mystatehistory.com web site. He holds several degrees from the University of Georgia.
